Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Malignant Solid Tumors in Children
نویسنده
چکیده
The prognosis of malignant solid tumors in children has been improved by multidisciplinary therapy involving surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. High-dose chemotherapy (HDC) followed by autologous (Auto) or allogeneic (Allo) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has contributed significantly to improvements in the prognosis of high-risk chemosensitive tumors. It has been utilized in many kinds of pediatric malignancies, not only hematopoietic tumors but also solid tumors such as neuroblastoma, brain tumors, Ewing’s sarcoma, osteosarcoma, Wilms’ tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma, hepatoblastoma, and retinoblastoma. Fig, 1 shows the numbers of cases in which HSCT was used for pediatric solid tumors in Japan. When HSCT is utilized in patients with malignant solid tumors, there are several treatment objectives. First, it can be intended as a curative treatment acting on the minimal residual malignant cells after

The introduction and evolution of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) could be traced back to 1950s, to the studies on interactions among irradiation, covering spleen and bone marrow from it and injection of bone marrow cells. Today, HSCT is considered a well-established, effective and promising means of therapy for various malignant and non-malignant medical conditions, both in chil...

BACKGROUND In childhood cancer, consolidation treatment with chemotherapy followed by autologous hematopoietic progenitor stem cell transplantation is currently an accepted treatment modality in patients with high-risk solid tumors or in patients who have relapsed after conventional treatment. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to describe the results of transplantation of a group of ...

Background: Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a strategy used for treatment of different malignant diseases. However, success of allo-HSCT can be hampered by graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD). Natural killer (NK) cells may play an important role in activating antigen presenting cells and subsequent activation of T cells. The main purpose of this study was the evaluation...

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been practiced for more than 30 years. Hematological malignanciesare the main indications for this treatment. However, its indications in adults are different from children.Advances in chemotherapy and target therapy have improved treatment outcome of some of the very high riskcancers, and changed indications of HSCT in children. Multi-center c...

Even if the overall survival of children with cancer is significantly improved over these decades, the cure rate of high-risk pediatric solid tumors such as neuroblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma family tumors or rhabdomiosarcoma remain challenging. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) allows chemotherapy dose intensification beyond marrow tolerance and has become a fundamental too...
